U4AOS1 Topic 13: Diffraction

Diffraction is the spreading/bending of waves as they pass through or move around objects and its relationship can be described through the following formula.

DiffractionλwDiffraction \propto \frac{\lambda}{w}

This means that the amount that the waves diffract is proportional (grows at the same rate) as the wavelength and the size of the gap. If this value is less than 1 then the diffraction is not significant.
